Anna Cordell has always been a ‘maker’. From her youngest years spent singing and writing folk songs on her nylon string guitar, to the first stitches of her design work, and all the way into motherhood, Cordell has a natural flair for creation.

After taking an almost decade long hiatus from music making - a period in which she became a mother to five children and began working on her now thriving clothing label @annacordellclothing Anna has now made her return to music, having released her first full-length record ‘Nobody Knows Us’ just before lockdown last year.

Recorded in Lyttleton, New Zealand by Ben Edwards (Aldous Harding, Marlon Williams, Julia Jacklin) ‘Nobody Knows Us’ is an album that wears its heart on its sleeve.

"Anna Cordell is Fascinating" Tim Rogers, JJ

"The most moving and enthralling folk tunes we've heard all year" Tonedeaf

"Delicate and Haunting" Caz Tran JJJ

Taking inspiration from folk writers of the 60s and 70s, from Sandy Denny to Nick Drake and Sibylle Baier, as well as more contemporary counterparts like Midlake and Radiohead, Anna has created a collection of songs that stay true to her belief in the value and power of art.

‘Nobody Knows Us’ explores the space within us that is separate to the wider world. The internal resources that no external factor can control, and the freedom that comes with that preservation. Following a writing process that saw Anna through the grief of lamenting a loved one, as well as the joy and energy of new life, this record grapples with ideas of meaning and purpose, asking questions that only the rawness of life and death can evoke."

Cordell releases this single, ‘Nobody Knows Us’ ahead of her next major release to give us a taste of a new mood and sound to come.

"After dropping everything last year to be home full time with my kids in lockdown, keeping my clothing business alive, I wanted to come back to my music with a band and enjoy the community that it brings playing with other people. It's drawing new things out of me and I'm really excited about sharing new music again!"

"The children" is about the place we find ourselves now- particularly in the west... where distraction, ambition, materialism and cynicism has taken over so much that we have lost the ability to read signs in the world around us that might point to something more ethereal. Religious institutions have become so corrupt, they have soiled the messages that were hidden within them for centuries.

So many of us feel cut loose internally- as if we're floating in space with no direction, nobody to guide us, nobody to trust.

This song is about looking for signs in the little things. The waves, the flickering of a candle, the stars in the sky. It's reflecting on all this...with a sense of hope that there is something more out there for us to connect to- something that also connects us all together.
