The Resilience Effect. Building Regional Resilience on Eyre Peninsula

With a focus on Building Regional Resilience, the 84th Annual EPLGA Conference promises to energise and entertain,
invite new thinking, spark dynamic conversations and inspire renewed commitment to work together for the benefit of our region.
You'll be joining over 200 delegates from 11 Councils, along with industry representatives, state and federal
government decision makers, sponsors and supporters at the Port Lincoln Racing Club on the 25th and 26th of
February, 2021 for two thought-provoking days and nights.

Day 1 will commence with the Board Meetings of the EPLGA and Regional Development Australia EP, followed by the
Inaugural Eyre Peninsula Major Project Hub and Regional Growth Showcase featuring Executive Speakers
representing over 7 billion dollars worth of investment in projects across Eyre Peninsula. An informal dinner and Tunarama Tuna Toss night will round-out Thursday’s program.

Day 2 will include inspirational speakers, cutting-edge leadership development and an afternoon workshop session
giving delegates the opportunity to combine forces on a region-wide resilience building project.
The Conference will wrap-up on Friday night with a Gala Dinner featuring the famous Flaming Sambucas who will be
sure to fire up the dancefloor!

Conference Theme
At the start of 2021 we have every reason on Eyre Peninsula to be celebrating our continued success in attracting
investment and driving growth across the region. At the same time, there is also evidence of a rise in mental illness,
particularly in parts of the region where drought continues to have a devastating impact on our farming families.
When asked about future concerns, community members right across the region consistently identify mental health at the top of their list. And while this challenge may be perceived to be the sole domain of the health sector, the
inextricable links between health and the economy which became globally apparent throughout 2020, are now
becoming increasingly important local considerations.

Research shows that resilient individuals have a powerful impact on those around them. They create a kind of ripple
effect. In other words, a resilience effect. We also know that investing in building resilience at scale can have a
significant “bottom-line” impact for organisations and communities and overall positive economic benefits.
So, if resilience is defined as “the ability to withstand, recover and or grow in the face of stressors and changing
demands” (The RAND Corporation) could Local Government further leverage regional growth on the EP by actively
fostering the development of resilience, in both individuals and collectively?

What are the key skills and strategies that we can use as leaders to increase our own resilience so that we might, in
turn, boost the resilience of our teams, organisations and communities? And ultimately, how could Local Government work together more effectively to invest in building “regional resilience”?
