Soundgarden seem to be on a a bit of a roll lately when it comes to unearthing forgotten musical gems. Earlier this year, when they visited our shores for Soundwave 2015, the grunge metal pioneers busted out a Superunknown-era song live for the first time ever. And today, another lost treasure from the Superunknown era has made itself, well, known,
The year was 1994, and the Chris Cornell-fronted band were touring off their seminal fourth studio album. Older Aussie fans who were lucky enough to snag tickets might remember seeing the band play a bizarre short film featuring the song Night Surf, prior to hitting the stage. Those fans were the only ones who’d ever seen the clip, until now.
Two decades on, the Night Surf video has finally been released in all of its brain-bending glory.
“Those who were in attendance and attentive to the intro at a Soundgarden concert during this tour have been the only ones fortunate enough to view and hear Night Surf,” guitarist Kim Thayil tells Rolling Stone. “The film had been buried in storage, and only recently was it located, dusted off and remastered for its debut here, online or anywhere.”
The song Night Surf itself, which was written by bassist Ben Shepherd, was also released as part of last year’s Soundgarden ‘rarities collection’, Echo of Miles: Scattered Tracks Across the Path.
As Loudwire reports, the band plans to begin writing new material soon, with their sights set on releasing their seventh album sometime in 2016.
