Watch The Avalanches Return To The Stage, Play Their First Gig In 15 Years At Spain’s Primavera Soun

The Avalanches have dusted off the stage rust to perform their first live show in one-and-a-half decades at Barcelona’s Primavera Sound Festival.

In a surefire taste of what Aussie fans can expect from their imminent gig at Splendour In The Grass next month, the Melbourne electro pioneers dished up the live debut of new track Frankie Sinatra and other brand spankers off their forthcoming album Wildflower.

One of the newbies, dubbed Subways – which the band closed out the set with – might even sound familiar to super-fans who called in to The Avalanches’ telephone hotline last week.

Reviewers have called the set a “joyous hour-long dance party in front of the Mediterranean Sea” (Stereogum) and highlighted the fact that it felt more like a traditional DJ set than a live show.

However, the good vibes were clearly infectious, with The Avalanches’ Robbie Chater and Tony Di Blasi visibly turnt AF to be back onstage together again after such a long hiatus, bouncing around behind the decks, swigging liquor from the bottle and constantly hugging one other (bless!).

They opened things up with the Felix Da Housecat remix of Nina Simone‘s Sinnerman mixed into their own classic Stay Another Season, before launching into a party mash-up set that featured Bowie’s Let’s Dance, Heard It Through The Grapevine, Jamie XX’s I Know There’s Gonna Be (Good Times), The Macarena (LOL) and even some salsa music because, Spain.

Obviously the crowd lost their shit when The ‘Lanches dropped classic Frontier Psychiatrist off their iconic 2000 album Since I Left You.

As Faster Louder points out, because of the mashed-up nature of the set, it was difficult to determine what other song shards might be from Wildflower, however, “judging by the seamless mixing of the samples it sounds like The Avalanches have one slick and well-produced album on their hands”.

Check out some fan-shot footage of the set’s biggest moments below, and we’ll catch you at Splendour.
