Watch Foo Fighters’ Secret Gig Shut Down An Entire New Orleans Block

The Foo Fighters have been on something of a roll recently, delighting fans with secret performances seemingly every week. Most recently, the band took on New Orleans’ Preservation Hall, drawing a crowd so massive that police were forced to shut down an entire city block.

The Times-Picayune reports that the band hinted at a possible NOLA performance earlier that day, tweeting a photo of Dave Grohl sharing drinks with members of the legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Attached was a missive reading, “So… NOLA, what’re you guys up to tonight?”

The show kicked kicked off just after 9pm with a 30-minute set by the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, before the Foos took the stage next, facing out into the street as they blitzed a 90-minute set featuring hits like Times Like These, Cold Day in the Sun, My Hero, Learn to Fly, and This Is a Call.

Also in attendance were Arcade Fire‘s Win Butler and Régine Chassagne, and journalist Anderson Cooper. The surprise performance was done as part of the band’s latest project – a new album that is being recorded at legendary music studios in eight different cities across the Unites States.

In addition to recording sessions, Grohl is working on an HBO series that will document his visits to the iconic studios and will feature interviews with notable musicians, many of whom will appear on the forthcoming Foo Fighters album. Grohl described the show as a “love letter” to American music.
