Still mourning the loss of his good friend George Michael, music legend Elton John has used a Las Vegas concert to pay tribute to the late singer and former Wham! frontman, sharing some heartfelt reflections on Michael’s death and dedicating a song to his memory.
Footage has emerged of John’s touching tribute to Michael, taken from the crowd during his Las Vegas show on Wednesday night.
Addressing the audience, John begins by saying, “On Christmas Day, George Michael passed away. It was one of the saddest moments of my career…
“It was the most awful news, because he was on the road back — supposedly — to good health…
“More than anything, as a human being, he was one of the kindest, sweetest, most generous people I’ve ever met. He gave so much money to so many great causes, without telling anybody.”
John then sings ‘Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me’ (which he and Michael once recorded a version of together), as a picture of Michael is projected in the background.
John reportedly garnered a standing ovation for the tribute, and was visibly emotional following the performance.
Following Michael’s death earlier this week at the age of 53, John took to Twitter to say, “I am in deep shock. I have lost a beloved friend – the kindest, most generous soul and a brilliant artist.”
George Michael’s body was discovered by his boyfriend on Christmas Day, with tribute flowing in from around the world ever since.
