Watch Dave Grohl Explain Why Foo Fighters Rickrolled The Westboro Baptist Church

Earlier this week, enlightened minds across the internet let out a collective squee of delight upon learning that those skidmarks upon the underpants of humanity, also known as the Westboro Baptist Church, had been given a good old fashioned Rickrolling by career legends, the Foo Fighters.

Dave Grohl & co crashed the latest hateful and no-doubt bats**t insane protest held by the “religious” group, whose greatest hits include “God Hates Fags”, “Obama = Antichrist” and “Jews Killed Jesus”, outside their Kansas City concert on Friday, serving them a loud dose of Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up.

And it turns out, later that night, during the concert itself, Grohl explained the importance of the hilarious troll to fans.

Heading into an acoustic rendition of My Hero, rock n’ roll’s one true messiah preached his message of love, acceptance and standing up for what’s right.

“You can’t just sit there and do nothing; you got to go out and say what you want to say. So we did,” Grohl said (transcribed by Rolling Stone).

“Tonight, we were sitting backstage, and someone said: ‘Guess who is coming tonight?’ And I said, ‘Who?’ They said, ‘Them.’ I said, ‘Why?’ They said, ‘Cause.’ And I said, ‘Cool, let’s go out and f**kin’ hang out with them.’

“So we didn’t have enough time to put together the big old show that we put on last time,” he continued, referring to the elaborate stunt that Fooies pulled on the controversial church when they picketed their concert back in 2011 (video below).

“So we figured, you know what? Why don’t we just f**king rickroll their ass? Cause nothing says love like a little Rick Astley in your life, you know what I’m saying? Never gonna give his ass up!”

While still strumming My Hero, Grohl added: “So I’m going to dedicate this song to all the people who go out and speak their mind, to stand up for what they think is right, because every time we got to stand up in this city in front of them, we do it because we feel like we’re standing up for what we think is right.”

Amen.
