Yours Truly and Adidas Originals have unveiled the latest instalment of their Songs From Scratch series, this time pairing Australia’s favourite hirsute electronic impressionist, Chet Faker, with US rapper, GoldLink. The two infrequent collaborators got together to make “a song about a girl.”
“I haven’t collaborated a lot for starters, so vocally I had to let go,” explains Chet. “So it’s nice to come into a room and say that I’m not going to have to do everything today.” Likewise GoldLink, the mind behind the acclaimed The God Complex mixtape, is used to a certain creative isolation.
But after Chet described a “disgustingly attractive” girl he’d recently met in Vancouver, the foundation for the pair’s collaboration was set. Chet had already taken care of some of the musical components, immediately sitting himself behind a keyboard upon entering Werewolf Heart studios.
“We’re just writing about how no matter how much you have, you just want to spend it on that one girl,” explains Goldlink in the video document readers can check out below. “My verse is from his point of view,” the young Virginia rhyme-slinger explains. “I’m the narrator of this story.”
The collaboration between Chet and GoldLink is only the latest in a string of interesting partnerships in the Songs From Scratch series, which in the past has featured collaborations between Angel Haze and Lunice, Danny Brown and Araabmuzik, Chance the Rapper and Nosaj Thing, and more.
