Watch: Bruno Mars, Red Hot Chili Peppers Perform During Super Bowl Halftime Show

Following a much-hyped pre-Super Bowl performance from the Foo Fighters, the main musical festivities of the evening went off with a massive bang at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, with a performance from pop king Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Super Bowl organisers managed to avoid any controversies, such as 2012's incident involving rapper M.I.A. and a middle finger, which the artist later claimed was a spiritual gesture. This may have something to do with not recruiting GWAR, despite a strong grassroots campaign.

While Mars’ performance wasn’t the kind of spectacle Beyonce and her sisters in Destiny’s Child managed to put on for one the US’ most watched events, the singer oozed confidence and cheerfulness as he opened the show with a drum solo before launching into Locked Out of Heaven.

Following a performance of Treasure, the biggest cheers of the night were reserved for rock legends the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who ignited the stage with a performance of their career-defining hit Give it Away, with Mars and crew in their gold suits dancing onstage alongside them.

Mars’ heartfelt performance of Just the Way You Are, which culminated in a brilliant fireworks display, followed a series of video messages from overseas-stationed members of the US armed forces. Readers can check out the Super Bowl XLVIII halftime show in its entirety, below.
