The extent of Amy Winehouse’s beauty and tragedy have been slowly but surely realised via the new documentary Amy, and now yet another heart-wrenching piece has been unveiled.
In the latest footage from the critically-acclaimed film, the singer can be seen belting out her would-be hit Back To Black, unaccompanied, in the studio alongside superstar producer, Mark Ronson.
“It was just one of those serendipitous things. I just caught her at that magic moment, and she was just ready to get it going,” Ronson says of the Back to Black title track in the film. “That’s why I couldn’t understand what everyone else was saying about this procrastinating, troubled artist.”
In the clip, Winehouse herself speaks as well. “I had these feelings, these words floating around in me,” she says. “When you write a song, you have to remember how you felt. You might have to remember what the weather was like. You might have to remember what his neck smelled like. You have to remember all of it.”
Amy, which was directed by Asif Kapadia, is made up almost entirely of archival footage and personal home movies of the late singer, who tragically passed away in 2011.
While members of Winehouse’s family have trashed the doco, Ronson himself recently applauded it. “The really respectful thing about the movie is you are reminded why she was famous in the first place – she was a genius, that’s the stuff even I can forget,” Ronson told The Mirror.
“I forget that when I played her the piano chords to Back To Black, she wrote the lyrics in an hour. I was blown away; people just don’t write lyrics like that any more.”
Amy has also been given a rave review by our mates at Crave Online, who called it “a tough, explicit look at one of the more truly-tortured performers of the 21st century”.
Amy is out in Australia now. Check out the clip of the titular songstress and Mark Ronson making magic in the studio, below.
