The winner of Triple J’s Hottest 100 of 2013 has been announced as Vance Joy who secured the top spot with his single, Riptide, with Lorde and her ubiquitous hit Royals coming it at a very respectable number two, and Daft Punk with their smash hit Get Lucky at number three.
Melburnian Vance Joy had already made it into the Hottest 100, securing the 95 spot with his song Play With Fire, from his EP God Loves You When You’re Dancing, which also bore Riptide, the impossibly catchy, sweetly sung indie folk number that seemed to be inescapable in 2013.
“Riptide is a first for the Hottest 100 in a couple of respects,” said Triple J Music Director Richard Kingsmill. “We’ve never had a winning song from an artist who is so new that they’ve not even had an album to their name yet. It’s also the first #1 to have been written on a ukulele.”
There’s very little left to say about Lorde, the Kiwi who stole the world’s collective heart in 2013. From filling in for Frank Ocean at Splendour In The Grass to an international number one hit single, to signing a major publishing deal, to the Grammys, and now the Hottest 100.
It’s been an incredible 12 months for the talented Lorde, who at 16 has become the youngest solo artist ever to appear in the Hottest 100, as well as the second artist to have three songs from a debut album chart in the Top 20, the first being Aussies Wolfmother back in 2005.
Since the release of the industrial, minimalist sounds of 2005's Human After All, fans were waiting for Daft Punk to return with something a bit beefier, and boy did those Frenchmen deliver. Armed with the chops of Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers, Get Lucky was the dance floor anthem of 2013.
Launching us into the top 10, we had the handsomely hirsute London Grammar with Strong, followed by rising stars The Preatures with Is This How You Feel?. Matt Corby took number eight with Resolution, chasing Lana Del Rey with Young And Beautiful from The Great Gatsby soundtrack.
Arctic Monkeys were all over the list this year, with their album AM sending Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High? into the number six spot and Do I Wanna Know? into number four. Meanwhile, ARIA golden boy Flume and buddy Chet Faker nabbed number five with Drop The Game.
Aussie artists did mighty well in the Hottest 100's 21st year, with 44 of the final poll spots have been taken up by Aussies, following the casting of 1,492,619 votes by 173,658 music fans in 169 countries around the world, just under last year’s 187,975 voters and 1,516,765 votes.
Other interesting stats include the 17 songs released in May which made the cut, making May 2013 the most popular month for Hottest 100 tracks, including songs by Lorde, The Preatures, Touch Sensitive, HAIM, London Grammar, Violent Soho, The Kite String Tangle, and Big Scary,..
