Tupac Shakur Musical Heading To Broadway

The music of Tupac Shakur is being used as the basis for a new Broadway musical, Holler If Ya Hear Me, to be co-produced by the late rapper’s mother, Afeni Shakur, and set to debut in the 2013-2014 season.

But the musical isn’t a biopic and won’t feature Tupac as a character, with director Kenny Leon telling Broadway.com that Holler If Ya Hear Me is “a present day musical using all of Tupac’s music”. Leon will use Tupac’s songs to tell the story of 2 childhood friends who are “struggling to reconcile the challenges and realities of their daily lives with their hopes, dreams and ambitions”.

The musical, written by Todd Kreidler, will be set in a midwestern industrial city like Detroit or Cleveland, which seems like an odd choice considering Shakur was born in New York and raised in California. But hey, if Leon changes his mind and decides that the All Eyez On Me rapper should make an appearance in the musical, he can always use the same hologram technology Coachella did to have Tupac himself make an appearance.
