It looks like The Strokes are planning to debut new material at their upcoming live shows if we’re to read into a tweet sent out by guitarist Albert Hammond Jr.
The New York band are set to headline NYC festival Governors Ball alongside Kanye West and Beck early next month and a fan tweeted at Hammond Jr, “playing any unreleased strokes singles at govs ball?”
“You’ll just have to wait and see,” he replied which surely is a cryptic way of saying “yes” without saying it explicitly.

In the same Twitter Q&A he also responded to a fan asking when the album’s coming out with “tomorrow” which sounds like a far more sarcastic response but anything’s possible in the era of surprise album drops.

Details of new Strokes music has been leaking out slowly. In March, CEO of music media company Nue Agency Jesse Kirshbaum said in a since deleted tweet, “Love hearing that new Strokes song blasting down the office in the hall.”
The band haven’t released anything since their 2013 record Comedown Machine but they were expected to be entering the studio last year to work on a follow-up.
During a Reddit AMA, the organisers of Governors Ball explained why they were excited to have The Strokes on the lineup, hinting that they’d have new music with them.
“This would be their first batch of new tunes in, well, just about a half decade. Kind of a big deal,” they wrote.
If they are debuting new music at Governors Ball then surely they will also be trying out new material when they visit Australia for Splendour In The Grass just over a month later. We’ll have to wait and see.
