“I always tell people: When he’s ready, the world is gonna get it,” Malay, who worked as a producer on Ocean’s 2012 album Channel Orange, told Pitchfork. “It could be tomorrow… Well, not tomorrow but maybe a month.”
“We’ve all been working hard,” he continued. “He’s been working super hard. I feel like he’s working harder than he’s ever worked in his life… I think people are going to be pleasantly surprised, for sure.”
Ocean fans can look forward to a more raw approach from the artist this time round, according to Malay. “A lot of the stuff on this new album was done with a handheld mic sitting in the control room,” he said.
“Frank’s exploring different vibes completely on this album. I wouldn’t say it’s vocally looser but just his mentality; it doesn’t seem as meticulous at certain times.”
Ocean’s last record Channel Orange was released to massive critical acclaim in 2012 and won Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 2013 Grammys. The new album has been rumoured to be titled Boys Don’t Cry.
It was recently reported that Ocean previewed tracks from the album at a listening party in New York, although leaked snippets of those recordings have now been taken offline. We’ve been hurt enough before to not get all our hopes up, but could 2016 finally be the year for new Frank Ocean?
