Dennis Edwards who was the lead-singer of legendary Motown group The Temptations has died at age 74.

Edwards’ family confirmed to CBS that he passed away in Chicago, however, they did not reveal the cause of death.

He joined the group in 1968 and won Grammy Awards with songs like ‘Papa Was A Rolling Stone’ and ‘Cloud Nine’.

In 1977, he split with the group and pursued a solo career, releasing three albums. He then rejoined the group for a couple of years but ultimately left in 1989.

In the same year, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame as a member of The Tempatations.

The Temptations were one of the most influential groups of the Motown-era, clocking four number one singles in the US. Otis Williams is the only original member still performing in the group.

Williams paid tribute to Edwards writing, “He is now at peace, and our love and prayers go out to his family.”

“At this moment and always, we acknowledge his extraordinary contribution to The Temptations legacy, which lives on in the music. Temptations, forever.”
