Sum 41 Are Back Making New Music

The band that you’re reminded about every time you visit your local public swimming pool, Sum 41, are back making new music following frontman Deryck Whibley’s admission to hospital last year with kidney failure related to his problem drinking.

The pop-punk veterans revealed on a post to their Facebook page that they’re back rehearsing and writing new songs. “After 2 years not playing together the band sounded tighter than ever. had a great time playing the old ones. tomorrow we work on the new ones!”

Whibley’s health issues, which, at their worst, saw him in a coma for a week, were the result of years of substance abuse and, as told in a interview with Noisey recently, will feature heavily in the song-writing process for new Sum 41 material.

“You can’t go through something like that and not have it in your work but I mean, my life always comes out in my music. It’s finding ways to talk about these things without being direct. Like, I’m writing a song called, ‘Goddamn, I’m Dead Again’, you know.”

Whibley is the last remaining original member of the Canadian outfit, with long-time drummer Stevo Jocz quitting after their most recent album, 2011’s Screaming Bloody Murder.
