St. Vincent Says Her Next Album Will Be Her “Deepest, Boldest Work” Yet

Annie Clark, better known as the quirky US guitar wizard St. Vincent, has spoken in detail for the first time about the follow-up to her self-titled 2014 record, revealing that her next album will be a “real sea change” incorporating her “deepest, boldest work” yet.

Speaking with Guitar World, Clark says she’s focusing hard on finishing the new as-yet-untitled album at the moment, as it’s due for release in the Australian autumn of 2017 (that’s been March and May).

Clark says the recording process has been more drawn out than some of her previous albums, and has seen her spend quite a bit of time reflecting on her career.

“I’ve been able to step back and reflect and not just be in the tour, record, tour, record cycle that I’ve been in for about 10 years,” Clark says.

“I think it’ll be the deepest, boldest work I’ve ever done. I feel the playing field is really open for creative people to do whatever you want, and that risk will be rewarded—especially now that we have such high stakes from a political and geo-political standpoint.

“The personal is political and therefore the political can’t help but influence the art. And only music that has something pretty real to say is gonna cut the mustard.”

Clark debuted new music earlier this year, while dressed as a toilet. Since then, she’s also reimagined the Golden Girls theme song into something pretty damn terrifying.

So by the sounds of it, it wouldn’t be too farfetched to expect a loud, creative and political St. Vincent album in 2017, along with some equally political choreography (and maybe more toilet work?) as part of Clark’s live shows.

All we can do now is sit back and wait for it to arrive.
