Slum Sociable have returned with a dark and brooding new single dubbed ‘Castle’ to drive home the announcement of their long-awaited debut album.
The self-titled LP — which is set to give fans their first full-length dose of the duo’s trademark blend of jazz, electronica and soul — was recorded between Melbourne and London with legendary producers Russell Fawcus (The Temper Trap) and Rich Cooper (Mystery Jets), and is due out on Friday, 13th October.
The disc’s second musical offering, ‘Castle’, is much moodier than its first (AKA lush, synth-drenched ballad, ‘Don’t Come Back Another 100 Times’), layering melancholy vocals over a down-tempo hip-hop beat.
“It’s a song about the walls people put up around themselves, for whatever reasons, and about trying to break through them with the intent to help,” the group’s Miller Upchurch explains.
‘Castle’ comes packing an evocative music video, directed by upcoming VCA filmmaker Sarah-Jayne Kernaghan, which sees Slum Sociable stepping out into the limelight with a pensive and emotional performance.
“Understanding ‘Castle’ and then fusing it with the minimal aesthetic was the starting point,” Kernaghan says.
“I knew there was a hypnotic darkness we needed to capture. The cycling of inescapable relationships some of us fall into throughout life.”
Give it a watch and see how they did, below.
