Pixies Release ‘Bagboy’, First New Song In 9 Years

Bass player Kim Deal may have quit the band earlier in the month but that ain’t holding Pixies back. The alternative rock legends have just dropped Bagboy, their first new music in 9 years, sparking talk of a follow-up album to 1991's Trompe le Monde.

Bagboy is classic Pixies: lyrics half spoken, half sung by frontman Black Francis and a huge guitar riff from Joey Santiago, while Kim Deal’s replacement on bass is Jeremy Dubs, a western Massachusetts musician who sometimes plays with Francis. The track comes complete with video, with the eponymous Bagboy getting up close and personal with some fruit loops.

Francis says the music for Bagboy has been kicking around for years:

“There are some demos I made with Joey and David a few years ago in Los Angeles, related to a film idea that still has yet to see the light of day, although work on the music continued. The lyrics, coincidentally, were composed at a Starbucks Coffee in Harvard Square in Cambridge, about a hundred feet from where, 25 years ago, I composed some of the lyrics to an old Pixies song called ‘Break My Body’.”

Pixies last release was the 2004 single Bam Thwok. We hate to admit it but Deal or no Deal, Bagboy is pretty damn awesome – fingers crossed that an album announce from these guys comes our way real soon.
