Nirvana shared the stage with a raft of female music notables — Lorde, Joan Jett, St Vincent, and former Sonic Youth bass player Kim Gordon — for their performance during the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class of 2014 induction ceremony, currently happening at Brooklyn’s Barclays Centre.
Earlier today, local outlet Cleveland.com, who have two reporters on site at the Barclays Centre, live tweeted that the three surviving members of the legendary grunge group would perform with a series of female singers including Jett, Lorde, and avant-pop singer-songwriter St Vincent.
Cleveland.com confirmed that the Digital Witness singer had rehearsed with the Nirvana members earlier in the day and according to her Twitter, a performance set for Cleveland has been rescheduled, reportedly to allow for her attendance at the Rock Hall’s induction ceremony.
The singer contributed vocals during a performance of the band’s classic Nevermind cut Lithium, which she had performed during a concert over the weekend. Meanwhile, Lorde helped out on All Apologies, Kim Gordon took the vocal reins on Aneurysm, and Jett on Smells Like Teen Spirit.
Speculation as to who would front the remaining Nirvana members — Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear — was mounting when a cryptic photo was shared to the Foo Fighters Facebook page depicting Jett’s sticker-covered guitar sitting between Smear’s guitar and Novoselic’s bass.
Earlier this morning, audio of what was reportedly Joan Jett rehearsing with Nirvana was posted by Alternative Nation, whose reporter was filming video in the halls of the Barclays Centre. The clip was later removed by Alternative Nation. See a series of performance clips uploaded to Instagram below.
