MGMT Preparing To Release New Aphex Twin-Inspired Album This June
Written by Mike Hohnen on 31st January, 2013
In a recent chat with Rolling Stone, MGMT have revealed their plans to follow up on 2010's very odd and poorly received Congratulations. Though they kept the deets on the new release close to their chest, they did reveal a few gems.
Speaking on behalf of the duo, Ben Goldwasser explained that the pair, who have kept a very low profile for most of 2012, have been hard at it, laying down tracks with Dave Fridmann at his Tarbox Road Studios in New York. Tracks bear names such as Mystery Disease and Alien Days, and as reported, we can expect a cover of Introspection by the 60's garage band Faine Jade.
As one point of difference from Congratulations, the band recorded the tracks on their own, rather than with a full band, and described the sessions as a mix of free-form jams and electronic productions that draw many parallels to Aphex Twins, which the pair have apparently been listening to a lot lately.
Goldwasser tells Rolling Stone that the band are “not trying to make music that everyone understands the first time they hear it… There’s no illusion on [Columbia Records'] part that we’re going to turn into a Top 40 band.”
The release has been slated for June. Stand by for more details.
