It became pretty bloody obvious recently that Justin Bieber was the biggest Metallica fan like eva and now the metal greats have returned the honour, referring to themselves as Beliebers and paying respect where they feel it’s due – though the band’s manager feels very, very different.
The topic is a hot talking point currently after footage of Bieber air-guitaring the solo from Fade To Black surfaced online in what is possibly the only time that song has ever been piss-weak. Biebs referred to that track and 1988 single One as his “jams” sending metalheads the world over into a state of total confusion.
Now Metallica’s comments in a recent interview with Q Magazine add even more uncertainty to our lifestyle choice.
When asked if the band were Beliebers, frontman James Hetfield said, “Are we Beliebers? Yes.” Straight up.
Mind you, it doesn’t sound like it takes a lot to impress this band these days. Drummer Lars Ulrich chimed in:
“Is it possible to have respect for him without being a Belieber? I think the kid’s really talented and obviously to go through what he’s going through at that early age must be a mindf**k. So the fact that he still goes out there and does it, I admire that and I think he’s super talented, so I guess I am kind of a Belieber. If he likes One, and Liam Gallagher likes him, OK, there you go.”
Lars, if Liam Gallagher jumped off a cliff… Ah, forget it.
Bassist Rob Trujillo offered a much more concise and motivational, “As long as he stays out of trouble, I’ll be a Belieber.” Classic bass player, Rob!
In an earlier interview, the band’s long-time manager Peter Mensch informed The Sun that he’d like to “take Bieber to the woodshed and spank him” following another bout of childish behaviour. Mensch added that the whole situation is a ticking time bomb, if even those within the inner circles of his camp are feeling the heat.
“His manager Scooter Braun is scared s**tless,” said Mensch. “I don’t know what Bieber’s problem is. His career is over in three years anyway.”
