If you think Aussie police are strict, this story about a Canadian man copping a $190 fine just for singing along to his radio just might make you have a rethink.
Yep, a guy by the name of Taoufik Moalla was driving along singing along to C+C Music Factory’s timeless dance hit ‘Gonna Make Your Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)’, when he was surprised to be pulled over.
CTV News Montreal reports that the man initially thought the police just wanted to pass him, but then pulled him over and questioned him about screaming in his car.
“I was thinking they wanted to pass, but they called on the speaker ‘Please go to the right side,’” said Moalla. “I stopped and four police came, two on each side, and checked the inside of the car. Then they asked me if I screamed. I said no, I was just singing.”
After checking his licence and registration, the cop returned to Moalla’s car and issued him a ticket for screaming in his car along with a fine for disturbing the peace. The fine came to $149 Canadian dollars, which is just over $190 AUD.
“I don’t know if my voice was very bad and that’s why I got the ticket,” he said. “But I was very shocked. I understand if they are doing their job, they are allowed to check if everything’s okay, if I kidnapped someone or if there’s danger inside but I would never expect they would give me a ticket for that.”
Moalla doesn’t believe he was singing too loud, and says he hopes that by explaining his situation to a judge when appealing the ticket, he’ll hopefully persuade the judge to drop the charge.
His wife apparently wasn’t surprised that her husband copped the fine. “She told me, if it was for singing, I’d have given you a ticket for $300,” he said.
On that note, we dare you to listen to the track and NOT sing along.
