16-year-old kiwi sensation Lorde and reclusive Canadian producer The Weeknd have teamed up to give Lorde’s track Royals a remix, firming the track’s hold in the “hottest song of the northern hemisphere summer” stakes.
The new remix forgoes the sparse, spacious atmosphere of the original version, with The Weeknd (real name Abel Tesfaye ) instead creating a bed of washy synths and reverb for Lorde’s instantly recognisable vocals to nestle into.
Tesfaye is lauded as one of the most innovative producers in the world right now, and this proves once again that he’s got the goods – his remix is a cool, clean affair that knows what’s good for it, never letting the production overpower the appeal of those delicious harmonies.
Lorde (real name Ella Yelich-O’Connor) is slowly taking the world by storm. Royals last week became the first song by a female solo artist to top the Billboard Alt Charts in 17 years, and her recent promo tour of the States attracted the praise of a wide range of celebrity supporters, from Grimes to the Backstreet Boys to Perez Hilton.
She recently dropped an official street date of 27th September for her debut album Pure Heroine, announcing a four-date east coast tour in October to plug the release.
Check out the new remix below, and prepare to pay tribute to your lady Lorde for the rest of 2013.
