Looks Like Gorillaz Just Collaborated With Vic Mensa In Lead Up To New Album

Gorillaz look like they may have secured Chicago rapper Vic Mensa as a collaborator on their highly anticipated forthcoming album, with a photo of the MC supposedly in the band’s Chicago studio hitting Instagram today.

As Consequence Of Sound reports, the photo of Mensa (below) was shared by producer Remi Kabaka Jr., who is also the voice of Gorillaz’s fictional drummer Russel Hobbs. Reddit user JordanPowers95 claims Kabaka tagged Mensa in the post but later removed the tag, fueling speculation that the rapper will appear on Gorillaz’s fifth album, the follow-up to 2011’s The Fall, which is expected to drop later this year.

Mensa has teamed up with Gorillaz’s musical mastermind Damon Albarn in the past, having performed the song Clint Eastwood with Albarn at New York’s Governors Ball Music Festival in 2014. You can relive that moment in all its glory, below.

As for other possible Gorillaz collabs, fans were salivating when the band’s co-creator Jamie Hewlett shared Instagram videos featuring French composer Jean Michel-Jarre, producer Anthony “Twilite Tone” Khan and singer-songwriter Liam Bailey back in April.

Mensa, on the other hand, was scheduled to perform in Australia across April and May as part of Groovin The Moo, but eventually cancelled his appearances and sideshows. Are Albarn and his crew partly responsible for this? Only time will tell.
