Lily Allen’s New Album Will Be Titled ‘Sheezus’

Lily Allen has revealed that the title of her upcoming third studio album, which has already yielded the singles Hard Out Here and Air Balloon, will be Sheezus, inspired by the title of rapper Kanye West‘s divisive 2013 album, Yeezus. Allen unveiled the title on BBC’s The Graham Norton Show.

As Billboard reports, Allen told show host Graham Norton, “It’s a confident title choice — and a little nod to Kanye West.” Like West, Allen is a notorious expert at generating controversy cum publicity for herself and has wasted no time in doing so since returning from a brief hiatus late last year.

Her return single, Hard Out Here, launched a thousand keyboards after some perceived the track’s music video as being racist and “culturally appropriative.” In response, Allen said the clip was “a lighthearted satirical video that deals with objectification of women within modern pop culture.”

The controversy followed a Twitter skirmish with rapper Azealia Banks. Having doused those flames, Allen ranted against Grammy judges for what she considered a slight against Lorde and slammed pop music as “a bunch of sterile f-cking Botoxed idiots” during an Esquire interview.

More recently, Allen has been drawing criticism for the likeness her new single Air Balloon, the video for which readers can check out below, bears to M.I.A.‘s 2007 hit Paper Planes. Sheezus, the follow-up to Allen’s 2009 LP It’s Not Me, It’s You, is currently slated for a late May release.
