Kurt Cobain’s ‘MTV Unplugged’ Sweater Just Sold For The Price Of A Modest Home Loan

The iconic green cardigan Kurt Cobain wore during Nirvana‘s MTV Unplugged set in 1993 has gone up for auction, with its burn hole, missing button and its slight discoloration leading it to sell for a massive USD$140,800 (AUD$200,000).

The jumper’s ridiculous sale price exceeded expectations, and it could now very well be the most expensive old cardi of all time.

The auction house which sold Cobain’s sweater, Julien’s Live, estimating that it would sell for up to USD$60,000 (AUD$85,000). Of course, the item went for wayyyyy beyond that, with punters having an all-out bidding war for the one-of-a-kind piece.

The cardigan, which was obtained by the auction house by a “close friend of the Cobain family”, comes with a signed letter of authenticity. Here’s how Julien’s Live describes the cheap-looking but now uber-expensive piece:

“The Manhattan brand sweater is a blend of acrylic, mohair and Lycra with five-button closure (one button absent), with two exterior pockets, a burn hole and discoloration near left pocket and discoloration on right pocket, size medium.”

Julien’s Live has previously sold a stage-worn t-shirt of Cobain’s for USD$25,000 (AUD$35,000), and has also been at work selling everything from John Lennon‘s hair to Elvis Presley‘s life insurance policy and Michael Jackson‘s dental mould recently, because the world is a weird, weird place.
