Kiwi-born songstress Kimbra is no stranger to the odd all-star collab. Her last album, the acclaimed The Golden Echo, featured cameos by Daniel Johns, John Legend, members of Dillinger Escape Plan and Queens of the Stone Age to name a few. But, if a recent Facebook post is anything to go by, New Zealand’s biggest export since The Lord Of The Rings franchise could be about to unleash one musical collaboration to rule them all.
The quirky popster has uploaded a photo of a “4am jam”, showing herself in the studio with some of the biggest names in dubstep, R&B and thrash metal: Skrillex, Miguel, and multi-genre bassist Thundercat of Suicidal Tendencies notoriety.
The sesh also featured Thundercat’s older brother, Ronald Bruner Jr, and Kimbra’s touring keyboardist Taylor Graves, who also offered a bit more of an insight into the in-studio goings-on via Instagram.
“Studio with thundercat, Kimbra, miguel, skrillex and Ronald Bruner Jr! What a night,” he posted, along with the revelatory hashtags “#music #bangers #collabs #turnup #goodtimes #sessions #trap #bass”.
This oddball combination of musos from the vast reaches of the planet’s most distant genres has already sparked much excitement and wonder on the social media circuit, with one fan dubbing the collab a “Justice League for music”.
We’ll be keeping an ear out.
