Karen O revealed details about the genesis of the record via a handwritten note published on her website. “When I was 27, I crushed a lot. I wasn’t sure I’d ever fall in love again,” wrote the now 35-year-old singer. “These songs were written and recorded in private around this time,” she continued. “They are the soundtrack to what was an ever continuing love crusade. I hope they keep you company on yours.”
While this is Karen O’s first official solo release, she has taken on a number of projects outside of her band the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Recently she received an Oscar nomination for The Moon Song, which was co-written with Spike Jonze for his film Her. She also worked with Nine Inch Nails‘ Trent Reznor and composer/producer Atticus Ross on a cover version of Led Zeppelin‘s Immigrant Song for the soundtrack to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Crush Songs is out in the US on September 9th this year. The album will be available as a limited-edition vinyl package which includes 15 cards of Karen’s own personal drawings and handwritten lyrics. It will also be available digitally, on CD, and as a single vinyl release. Pre-orders are available here.
