OK, so we know Kanye West isn’t exactly loved by all, but this is a bit OTT you guys. You can’t just go around threatening to kill people for booking acts you don’t like, no matter how many times they interrupt a Taylor Swift acceptance speech. Or attempt to interrupt a Beck one. But that’s the lengths that some Glastonbury fans have gone to in a bid to prevent Yeezy from headlining the 2015 event.
Glasto boss Emily Eavis, who organises the lineup alongside her father and Glastonbury founder, Michael, has revealed to the The Times, via The Guardian, that she received death threats after Ye was announced at the top of this year’s bill.
“It was not a pleasant world we unwrapped,” she says. “I had death threats and stuff. It was horrible. It was just crazy.
“The scrutiny is daily. Whatever we do is torn apart and analysed. It’s hard to concentrate on the job because you can get easily distracted by the hoo-ha… It was getting out of control.”
The violent threats were just the most insidious part of a widespread backlash over Mr. Kim Kardashian’s Glastonbury inclusion, with an online petition, calling for him to be dropped from the bill, attracting more than 130,000 signatures.
But despite the uproar, Eavis says she does not regret her decision to book West as headliner, alongside Foo Fighters and The Who.
“It was quite upsetting because we were talking about something that was so exciting for the festival. Kanye West is an amazing force as a performer,” she explains. “For us, getting the biggest star in the world was an amazing coup.”
Glastonbury 2015 runs from June 24th to 28th at its usual home of Somerset, England.
