How To Stay Safe In The Heat This Festival Season, According To Aussie Doctors

Australia’s summer music festival season has arrived for another year, and medical experts are urging punters to take it easy in those easily-overheated party paddocks, which can leave most of us feeling like this guy…

The peak body for Aussie GPs, the Australian Medical Association (AMA), has reminded Aussie festival-goers to drink plenty of H2O over the coming weeks, chill out in the shade when they can, and look out for one another like old m8s.

AMA President Dr Michael Gannon, says hot weather conditions can leave some punters struggling at local festivals, because it’s “easy to overindulge, overheat, or dehydrate”.

“Festival organisers should ensure that partygoers have access to free drinking water, shade, first aid services, and quiet areas where patrons to relax when they need a break,” Dr Gannon says.

“Avoid risky behaviour, and drink plenty of water. Drinking too much alcohol is never a good idea, and it can be particularly bad for your health if you’re spending long hours standing in the sun on a hot day.”

Dr Gannon also warns festival-goers against taking illicit substances, saying, “Tragically we have seen deaths and hospitalisations at festivals in previous years.

“Wear sunscreen, a hat, and sensible footwear, and keep an eye on the weather. And keep an eye out for your friends, to make sure they are not putting themselves in harm’s way.”

Stay cool out there, m8s.
