He blew your mind last month with a cover of The Simpson’s classic Flaming Moe’s featuring Alex Lahey, now absolute magician Dan Cribb is back with his take on another hit from the animated series, this time tagging in Grenadiers vocalist Jesse Coulter.
This time round, Cribb has tackled the operatic feat that is Dr. Zaius/Chimpan-A To Chimpan-Z, originally included in the score for Stop the Planet Of The Apes, I Want To Get Off! – a musical adaptation of Planet Of The Apes starring none other than Troy McClure.
“The passion driving me throughout the recording of this song was my hatred towards apes. I hate every ape I see from chimpan-a to chimpan-z,” Cribb tells us. It’s tongue-in-cheek sure, but also decidedly on-brand.
For his rendition, Cribb has left the structure almost completely unchanged (think Rock Me Amadeus by Falco, which is lol) instead morphing the whole thing in a balmy, wildly accessible, early-2000 alt-rock epic. Coulter’s gravelly vocals add a great sense of contrast, truly highlighting the tension in the plot.
“I’ve had this tune stuck in my head for years,” adds Cribb. “Troy Mcclure is a genius. I had an idea of the style I wanted to record it in and Jesse was the first person I thought of when it came to suitable guest vocalists. He’s got a killer voice that’s pretty diverse and made this cover sound awesome.”
Cribb has promised to release one of these super-covers a month, each time including a ~mystery guest~. The end result will be a cover’s album titled Worst Tribute Ever, featuring similar tunes Who Needs The Kwik-E-Mart and, of course, The Monorail Song. Oh, the suspense.
