Legendary vocalist Chris Cornell is currently in the midst of an acoustic tour across Australia, and was in Melbourne when he heard the shocking news of Scott Weiland’s death.
The pair’s career trajectories have been similar – both become rock icons in the ’90s, fronting two of the most iconic bands of the era (Stone Temple Pilots/Soundgarden) before going on to achieve even more success fronting supergroups in the naughties (Velvet Revolver/Audioslave).
So, naturally, the news of Weiland’s death affected Cornell on a deeply personal level, inspiring him to dedicate an acoustic performance of Temple Of The Dog’s moving ballad Say Hello 2 Heaven to his fallen brother during his show at The Palais Theatre on the night that the news broke. Now audio of the touching tribute has surfaced online.
Cornell originally penned Say Hello 2 Heaven as a tribute to Mother Love Bone frontman Andrew Wood, who died of a heroin overdose in 1990. Hear him perform it in 2015 for Scott Weiland, below.
