Haim Say “Girl Band” Term Is Insulting And “Medieval”

Los Angeles-raised sibling act Haim have said they don’t like being described as a “girl band”, calling the label an insulting and “medieval” description, because the trio play their own instruments. The comments come form a recent interview with the UK’s Sunday Telegraph.

“Growing up, there were a lot of girl artists like the Spice Girls, Aaliyah and Destiny’s Child,” said one third of Haim, Alana. “But none of them really played instruments and I would always look up to Stevie Nicks and Blondie – they are dope female musicians.”

“So I just see us as a band,” she continued. “When people call us a girl band, I take it as an insult – being a girl in a band shouldn’t be a thing. It seems so medieval.” During the interview, the band also revealed the reason why none of them took up the drums was because their father didn’t want to carry a kit when he was their roadie.

“Dad was adamant he didn’t want us to become drummers,” said Danielle. “He didn’t want to have to lug our shit everywhere.” Their father, in fact, was a drummer in the Israeli army before becoming a real estate agent.

The Haim sisters also spoke excitedly about watching Beyoncé‘s performance at this year’s Brit awards. “We were, like, so not keeping our cool at the Brits,” recalled Alana. “She was singing XO and no one was dancing, because we are all at tables,” she continued. “And, like, how do you not freak out when Beyoncé is on? So me, Este and Danielle were freaking out doing the XO dance [routine], and after the song she turned to us and said ‘Thank you!’”

The sisters Haim are gearing up for one hell of a 2014, with appearances scheduled at this year’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April, as well as Barcelona’s Primavera Sound festival in May.

NME reports Haim’s already danceable track If I Could Change Your Mind was recently remixed by legendary French disco producer Cerrone into an even more danceable entity. Check it out below.
