Gurrumul’s Posthumous Final Album ‘Djarimirri’ Is Almost Here

Gurrumul‘s final album Djarimirri (Child of the Rainbow), completed just weeks before his passing in 2017, will be released in April.

The Australian music legend, and the highest-selling Indigenous artist of all time, spent over four years making Djarimirri — the follow-up from 2015’s The Gospel Album — and it’s set to be a stunning meeting point of both traditional Yolngu culture and European orchestral culture.

“Last year we sat and listened to these recordings over and over again, from beginning to end and piece by piece, pulling them apart and putting them back together until all elements shone,” says close friend and longtime collaborator Michael Hohnen.

“We had played many of the pieces live over the past few years of touring and planned how the pieces would work before we recorded them in the studio. He was immensely proud of what we achieved on this album and it is an emotional experience for all of us to present this final enormous chapter in his story with this musical statement.”

Djarimirri coincides with the cinema release of GURRUMUL, a documentary on the music legend and his achievements which received a standing ovation at its international premiere last week. It arrives on 25th April.

Djarimirri (Child of the Rainbow), meanwhile, will be released on 13th April.
