Foo Fighters Reveal New Album Details, Confirm HBO Series

The Foo Fighters have officially confirmed that their as-yet-untitled eighth studio album will be released in conjunction with a new HBO series chronicling the “eight-city odyssey during which the record was created.”

Following reports yesterday that Foos frontman Dave Grohl would host his own show, the band have announced details of the Grohl-directed series, which sees the band visit studios in eight US cities – Chicago, Austin, Nashville, Los Angeles, Seattle, New Orleans, Washington, DC and New York. The series will coincide with both Foo Fighters’ 20th anniversary and their new album, which they confirmed will be out later this year.

Billboard reports, the band recorded one song at each stop with local legends sitting in while the lyrics were written “in an unprecedented experimental style”. Members of Cheap Trick are said to be featured during the Chicago portion while KISS frontman Paul Stanley, Heart‘s Nancy Wilson, Joe Walsh from The Eagles and Fugazi‘s Ian MacKaye are also expected to appear.

“Dave held off on putting down words until the last day of each session, so as to be inspired by the experiences, interviews and personalities that became part of the process,” reads a statement detailing the project. Grohl said the new series, set to premiere when the album drops, will be a “love letter to the history of American music,” with each episode looking at the identity of its respective city.

The full list of studios documented in the series hasn’t yet been revealed, but it was reported yesterday that Steve Albini‘s Electrical Audio and Don Zientara’s Inner Ear studios in Washington D.C., where Fugazi and Grohl’s pre-Nirvana punk rock band Scream recorded, are expected to appear.

“Every artist that appears in the show, regardless of genre or locale, started as an average kid with the universal dreams of making music and making it big,” reads the statement. They say additional details will be revealed in the coming weeks.

Grohl is already an award-winning director in his own right, having made his debut with the 2013 Grammy-winning doc Sound City, which told the story of the famed California recording studio of the same name.

As for the new album, producer Butch Vig said last month the band were “halfway done” with the recording. “It sounds different,” he added. “We’ve thrown a few things into the mix, in the recording process, that are going to give the record a different sound and a different feel. It’s been a challenge, but it’s also been exciting.”

An official release date for the Foos’ forthcoming eighth album has yet to be announced.
