The Foo Fighters have just released a surprise free EP of new songs, the news being revealed after the countdown clock on the band’s website finally clicked over to zero at midnight on the 23rd of November.
In an open letter accompanying the release, Dave Grohl said the release is dedicated to victims of the Paris attacks, the EP having “taken on an entirely different tone” since the attacks, after which Foo Fighters cancelled the remainder of their European tour.
According to iTunes, “this five-song EP captures nearly forgotten moments from the band’s 20-year odyssey—a brilliant patchwork of pieced-together riffs and song fragments that were tracked in an impromptu studio at Austin’s Hotel Saint Cecilia. The road-tested band blasts through the set of scrappy guitar-driven rockers with high-volume fury. Polished? No way. But the rowdy performances and rough edges make Saint Cecilia pack a visceral punch.”
The letter from Dave Grohl also describes the raucous and booze fuelled recording sessions at (great) length, which occurred as part of the frenetic Sonic Highways project. Taking over the Saint Celia hotel while performing at Austin City Limits, Grohl describes how “as we pulled up in the wee hours of September 30th, 2015, I was struck with a rather impulsive idea. To records some songs on our days off to give to world as a “thank you” for the last 2 years.”
It get’s real gushy, but is well worth a read as it give you a unrivalled glimpse behind life on the road for the Foos.
