Federal MP Name-Checks Darude’s ‘Sandstorm’ & Nickelback In Parliament

It’s been a very strange week in Australian politics. The worlds of popular music and Government have collided in increasingly bizarre and disconcerting ways, and tbh we’re not quite sure what to make of it all.

To begin with, both “Nickelback” and “‘Sandstorm’ By Darude” have just been enshrined in Australian political discourse forever, via a cheeky speech from LNP member for Brisbane, Trevor Evans.

Taking the floor in the House of Reps a few days ago to discuss the so-called ‘Innovation Agenda’, Evans worked up to plugging a Brisbane-based business called Nightlife Music and their crowd-sourcing public music platform, crowdDJ, by taking a subtle jab at perennial musical joke-butts Nickelback, before announcing that he knows the Deputy Speaker’s fave song is none other than “‘Sandstorm’ by Darude”.

So there you have it citizens, both Nickelback and Darude’s ‘Sandstorm’ have just been officially entered into Hansard, the official transcripts of Parliamentary Debates in the Commonwealth of Australia throughout history. #Strayaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

“You’re welcome,” Evans posted on Facebook with video of the glorious moment:

And ‘sif that wasn’t enough Politicians Do The Darndest Things for one week, we’ve also been gifted with this inexplicable video, featuring footage of actual WA Liberal Party members dancing awkwardly to Daft Punk’s ‘One More Time’.

God bless democracy.
