New Zealand seven-piece Fat Freddy’s Drop have, uh, dropped yet another track from their upcoming fourth studio album Bays in the form of angsty new single Razor.
Speaking about the new track, Fat Freddy’s Drop beatmaster DJ Fitchie says the work of keyboardist Iain “Dobie Blaze” Gordon is Razor‘s spacey backbone.
“There’s no f**king around on this one. Blaze is on fire,” DJ Fitchie says. “He’s on a synthesiser treadmill, struggling to stay in control at times but in the end provides the perfect backdrop for [vocalist] Dallas ‘Joe Dukie’ Tamaira’s angst-ridden words.”
Razor is one of nine tracks which will appear on Bays, the follow-up album to the 2013 Fat Freddy’s Drop release Blackbird. The nine-track record was recorded at the band’s BAYS Studio in Kilbirnie, Wellington on the site of a former HMV vinyl pressing plant.
Bays‘ mix of slow jams, reggae, jazz and techno rhythms came together largely in the studio. “It’s been a more creative process writing this album in the studio rather than recording songs which have been well road-tested”, says Dukie.
Bays is set for release in vinyl, CD and digital formats on Friday, 23rd October.
