Drake has probably completely blown his label’s annual budgets for special effects and make up on his new, and super creepy, video for Energy in which he transforms into such celebrities as Oprah, Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus and even President Obama.
“I was like, ‘Man, you know, effects have come such a long way. I bet we could do something crazy with this’,” he said, introducing the video to Zane Lowe on his Apple Music’s Beats 1 show.
“Crazy” is a pretty mild way to describe the outcome of Drake’s warped vision for the If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late track.
It starts off with a pretty goofy, and somewhat funny, Oprah impersonation, and then descends into a strange montage of Drake playing President Barack Obama, Floyd Mayweather, former Toronto mayor Rob Ford, LeBron James, Kanye West, Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber and, at one point, a Ken doll.
Apparently, the clip, like the song, is all about the haters.
“Everywhere you go, there’s always someone who wants to pull you down and even celebrity friends of mine or people that I don’t know,” explained the rapper. “I want people to rewind it a bunch of times and go and tell someone else to watch it. It’s shocking, it’s beautiful, it’s a lot of things.”
It is a lot of things. Watch for yourself.
