Rapper DMX, best known for hits like Party Up (Up in Here) and X Gon’ Give It to Ya, has agreed to fight George Zimmerman, the man acquitted of the second-degree murder of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin last year, in a boxing match, with contract decisions reportedly forthcoming.
According to CNN, the match was Zimmerman’s idea, telling Radar Online that boxing was his hobby prior to the shooting of Martin, an incident that proved a US cultural flashpoint. A mutual friend put him in touch with Damon Feldman, a well-known promoter of celebrity boxing matches.
While The Delaware County Daily Times is reporting that Feldman has scheduled a press conference with Zimmerman for later this month, TMZ reports that contract negotiations are ongoing, with DMX’s publicist telling the tabloid that the rapper won’t fight until a price is named.
“The boxing match between George Zimmerman and DMX is not officially confirmed. DMX has promised to ‘beat his ass’, but no contract or paperwork has been signed or agreed to yet. DMX will release an official statement if and when an agreement is made,” the publicist told Rolling Stone.
When asked by Rolling Stone why DMX was approached as a potential opponent, Feldman said, “We like him because he’s controversial,” bluntly adding, “Zimmerman’s controversial. And that’s it. He asked to fight him and said, ‘He’ll piss on his face.’ It’s not like we picked him out of a hat.”
According to Pitchfork, the rapper also said that he would be fighting on behalf of “every black person who has been done wrong in the system,” adding, “I am going to beat the living fuck out of him. I am breaking every rule in boxing to make sure I f-ck him up right.”
Other candidates to fight Zimmerman included fellow rapper The Game, who told TMZ, “I would not be boxing for me… I’d be boxing for the legacy of Trayvon Martin and his family.” The fight is scheduled to take place 1st March. Zimmerman has said he will give all money awarded to charity.
