Death Grips Announce They’ve Broken Up

Death Grips have taken to their official Facebook page to announce they have split. The controversial Sacramento-based experimental hip-hop group had only recently announced the release of their fifth LP, The Powers That B, which they insist will still be delivered later this year.

“We are now at our best and so Death Grips is over. We have officially stopped. All currently scheduled live dates are canceled,” write the band on Facebook. “Our upcoming double album The Powers That B will still be delivered worldwide later this year via Harvest/Third Worlds Records.”

“Death Grips was and always has been a conceptual art exhibition anchored by sound and vision. Above and beyond a ‘band’. To our truest fans, please stay legend,” they sign off. The band’s upcoming tour dates had included a string of gigs opening for Nine Inch Nails and Soundgarden.

The group, comprised of members Zach Hill, Stefan Burnett, and Flatlander, received high critical regard during their short but productive five-year existence. Regular controversy stemmed from their confrontational live performances, cancelled tour dates and appearances, as well as their famous nonchalance towards their record label, which saw them regularly leak their own albums online.

Considering the band’s aforementioned track record, some fans believe the group’s split could simply be their latest stunt intended to troll their fans. The band’s apparently cancelled tour dates are still listed on their official website — with no mention of a split — as well as on their Facebook. There is no word yet on what will happen with tickets purchased to previously announced performances.
