Daryl Braithwaite Says Green Day Are One Of His “Big Influences”

Australian music legend Daryl Braithwaite has revealed that American punks Green Day are one of his “big influences”, and we couldn’t be happier.

Speaking with Ben & Liam on triple j this week, the newly-minted ARIA Hall Of Famer revealed that his son first introduced him to Green Day, and it changed his life for the better.

“Maybe about 2006 I think it was, and Oscar, my son, for Christmas or my birthday or something, he gave me [Green Day’s] Bullet In A Bible DVD, and he said, ‘Dad, I think you’ll like this.’ And Oscar’s very perceptive,” Braithwaite said.

“I’d heard of Green Day, but I thought — stupidly — that they were like a folk band. So I got home, played the DVD, and I reckon since then I’ve played it about 200 or 300 times.

“[Frontman] Billy Joe [Armstrong] impressed me so much, or their whole thing, and not only their songs, just his arrogance and attitude.

“And I thought, ‘My god, if I could have a bit of that, just somehow.’ He’s been one of the big influences I think for me over the last decade. I know there’s a lot of arrogance there and all that, but I just thought he does it in a way that’s not too offensive.”

So there you have it, straight from the horse’s mouth…

Now somebody hurry up and make a mashup of ‘The Horses’ and ‘Good Riddance’, or get Daryl and Green Day to collab.

In other Braithwaite news, his Horseness performed ‘The Horses’ with some help from Guy Sebastian and Vera Blue at the ARIA Awards earlier this week, after he was inducted into the ARIA Hall Of Fame.
