D’Angelo Announces Long-Awaited New Album ‘Black Messiah’

American neo-soul and r’n’b icon D’Angelo, recently in Australia for Soulfest 2014, has finally announced his first new album in 14 years, Black Messiah, which will debut this Sunday at a New York City listening session.

Black Messiah is D’Angelo’s long anticipated follow-up to 2000's Voodoo and is attributed to D’Angelo and his band the Vanguard. As reported by Consequence of Sound, a video teaser for the album was posted online by D’Angelo’s manager. Watch it below.

While not confirmed, there is some speculation that the album could be released to the general public as soon as next week, as photographs of the album’s case and artwork are currently floating on Twitter with a printed release date.

In June this year, D’Angelo’s manager, Kevin Liles, promised fans they’d get a third album from D’Angelo, real name Michael Eugene Archer, before the end of the year. Liles said that 14 songs and a couple of bonus tracks, have been recorded for an LP that was shaping up to be a fusion of soul and rock.

“To limit it to soul is not the case, because there is a rock influence,” Liles said. “But at the same time, it’s very melodic and there’s an influence of all the things he loves: there’s James Brown, there’s Prince, and everything people grew up loving D’Angelo for, from Brown Sugar to Voodoo.”

Taking to the Australian Soulfest stage earlier this year, it appeared that D’Angelo previewed some of this new material. According to Music Feeds’ reviewer Donné Restom, at Soulfest Sydney D’Angelo “gave glimpses of his new sound (the lovechild of Marvin Gaye and Jimi Hendrix) while still putting out just enough of that delicious neo-soul stuff.”

D’Angelo spent some tumultuous years out of the spotlight since Voodoo‘s 2000 release, finally making his return to the stage in 2012. D’Angelo has already announced a slew of European Second Coming Tour dates for 2015.
