Speaking with Rolling Stone, Albarn said that he’s “in the very early days” of working on a new Gorillaz record, the first since 2011’s The Fall made entirely on an iPad.
“So far, it’s really fast, and it’s got quite a lot of energy. I’ve been stuck on piano, somewhere off Broadway, for years now. I want to go somewhere completely opposite of that.”
That’s all he gave away but Gorillaz records are always packed with guests and he gave his opinion on some of the biggest names in music right now leaving us guessing about who he could use for this record.
He called Kanye West “unique,” Taylor Swift “remarkable but not unique”, Drake “not as consistent as he could be” and said Rihanna was “cool.” He was most kind to Future saying the Atlanta rapper was, “really interesting, and sometimes exhilarating.”
Albarn’s last record was Blur’s The Magic Whip which he has toured for much of the year, including a headline set at this year’s Splendour In The Grass. Despite touring extensively he says he still tried to avoid Blur shows “like the plague.”
“But something weird happens once I’ve stepped onstage: I just have the best time. And then as soon as we get off, I say, “Never again.” It’s very strange,” he said.
“There has to be some sort of psychological paper that explains that emotion of trying to not do something; and then doing it, and then loving it; and then as soon as you’ve done it, trying not to do it again.”
He didn’t offer up any indication of when to expect the record but he indicated last year that they would be “reactivating” for a new Gorillaz LP in 2016.
