Brisbane outfit Cub Sport have returned with a big musical statement in the form of their latest single ‘O Lord’.
The first track from their forthcoming second album (the follow-up to their huge 2016 debut record This Is Our Vice), the track is something of a departure from the sound that we’ve come to know them for.
A far cry from their massive single ‘Come On Mess Me Up’, ‘O Lord’ is built around some gorgeous gospel-style harmonies which launch into a slow-burning, highly emotive piece of music.
The instrumentation is pretty gospel as well, built around an organ, and the track sees exploration of harmonies and reverb not heard from the band before.
“I wrote ‘O Lord’ in the wake of coming out last year,” says Cub Sport vocalist Tim Nelson.
“I suddenly had everything I’d ever wanted. I was free to be my true self, I was finally in a relationship with the love of my life and I had full love and support from my friends and family, but what I didn’t expect was the realisation that when you get everything you’ve ever wanted you suddenly have everything to lose. This song ended up being my way of grappling with those feelings.
“I followed the feeling from the intro and wrote the rest of the song from there. A month later we developed the drum loop with [producer] John Castle in his studio and then the whole song just clicked.
“The Gospel-influenced sound is probably a result of listening to a lot of Kanye [West]’s The Life Of Pablo and Chance The Rapper’s Coloring Book.”
