Courtney Barnett Wins Big At The Independent Music Awards

Courtney Barnett has cleaned house at the 2015 Carlton Dry independent Music Awards, scooping up the gongs for Best Independent Album for Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit, Best Independent Single for Depreston and Best Independent Artist for the second year running.

The ocker lady-bard, who is currently on tour in the US, accepted the major award via video message, gushing: “Thank you for this award for Best Independent Artist. This one means a lot to me, it’s important as an artist to be able to create what you want, when you want to and I’m very grateful to be able to do that right now.”

Other big winners of the night were #1 Dads aka Big Scary frontman Tom Iansek, taking out the coveted Breakthrough Independent Artist Of The Year gong following the release of his album About Face – and Seth Sentry, who scooped the Best Independent Hip Hop Album accolade.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard bagged the same award in the Hard Rock, Heavy or Punk category, beating out the likes of Northlane and The Smith Street Band, while Flight Facilities took out the Dance/Electronica field.

The night also yielded some stellar performances, with John Butler surprising everyone by appearing to bust out a rendition of his beloved 2007 hit Better Than, and Airling, Bad//Dreems, Dead Letter Circus and Harts similarly rocking the house.

Australian Independent Record Labels Association (AIR) CEO Dan Nevin has heaped praise on the whole affair.

“What a fantastic way to celebrate the 10th Awards and AIR’s 20th year,” he said. “It’s so great to see the independent sector come together and pay tribute to the great work that is seeing our artists find local and international success.”
