Corey Taylor Contemplates Slipknot’s Future And Musical Evolution

Slipknot frontman and general moral compass Corey Taylor has detailed internal discussions within the metal juggernaut about the band’s future and their need for musical evolution as they face the big question: “Where do we go?

Speaking to US radio DJ Full Metal Jackie, Taylor expresses a growing concern within the band about how they can maintain a forward progression. “It’s something that me and Clown and Jim have kind of been talking about for a couple of months now. Like, where do we go? I mean, this band has always tried to find the path less traveled…”

“We’ve always tried to expand the range of the music that we’re making and find new ways to speak our piece, find new ways to kind of push our agenda and our message. And it’s getting to the point where, at some point, the music will have to evolve. And I think from day one until this album, it has. We’ve done really great things to broaden our musical horizons. At the same time, though, at some point it’s gonna have to twist and it’s gonna have to change even more, because when does the war end? When do you feel like you’ve said everything you need to say on that subject?”

The band released .5: The Gray Chapter in 2014, their 5th full-length since their 1999 debut. Over the years, they’ve experienced a number of line up changes while they maintained a head-spinningly hectic international touring schedule, and recently the cracks began to show with Taylor expressing a need to take a breather from the workload.

Elaborting further to Blabbermouth, Taylor adds that the band will need to change, for his fear of becoming “the old guy who’s just bitching to hear himself bitch.” But rest assured fans, Slipknot will never stop being Slipknot…

“We write a certain type of music, even though that music may be very, very eclectic and varied, we still write what I consider Slipknot music. But at some point, that will have to evolve and become something new, because our message will have to change.”
