Chris Martin Honours George Michael In Surprise Performance At Homeless Shelter

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin has used a surprise appearance at a homeless shelter in London to honour late singer George Michael while covering songs by the likes of Wham!, The Beatles and Sarah McLachlan.

Volunteers, staff and guests at the shelter, which is run by the charity Crisis, were treated to a performance of Wham!’s ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go’ and the Xmas hit ‘Last Christmas’, which saw Martin duet with one of the shelter’s guests.

Martin went on to sing a number of other songs at the shelter, including Johnny Cash’s ‘Ring Of Fire’, Sarah McLachlan’s ‘Blackbird’ and The Beatles’ ‘Yesterday’. Catch footage of all of those performances, below.

Despite Martin performing at the Crisis shelter with no prior publicity, news of his appearance has made it onto social media, with one individual (who’s believed to be a Crisis volunteer) posting a photo of himself and Martin to Instagram, with the caption, “That moment when Coldplay’s Chris Martin drops into the Crisis at Christmas shelter, with no fuss, no fanfare and no press, to help make tea and coffee and also play guitar so the guests can have a sing song.”

Martin’s tribute to George Michael comes as Michael’s good mate Elton John used a Las Vegas show to honour his late friend. Michael died last week at the age of 53.

Coldplay were recently in Australia as part of their latest tour. During the jaunt down under, Martin wrote Australia a song about booze and kangaroos.
