Cedric Bixler-Zavala Announces New Band Zavalaz

Former Mars Volta frontman Cedric Bixler-Zavala has come good on promises to once again return to the music scene, with today marking the arrival of his new musical project Zavalaz. Backed by a troupe of renowned musicians, Bixler-Zavala has already announced tour dates and suggested that tunes from the band could be coming soon.

According to a flurry of tweets on the topic, Bixler-Zavala has confirmed he will be joined by former Them Hills and Hella guitarist Dan Elkan, drummer Greg Rogove, and former Mars Volta bassist Juan Alderete, while he himself mans the guitar.

As for material, Bixler-Zavala describes their genre on Facebook as “AM Gold”, and has also revealed that the band is 3 songs deep into their debut LP, describing their work so far:

“Lots of desert ballad space jams, lots of harmonies, lots of lap steel and piano. Lots of AM radio love songs. Short bitter sweet luv songs… I’m not making a rock record. It might lightly rock but not like I’m known for.”

Back in January, Cedric was the first of the Mars Volta crew to officially announce the band’s retirement, once again via Twitter, explaining that he tried his hardest to get a tour going for last Volta album Noctourniquet “but Omar did not want to”.

It seems that the only way to sample his new band’s tunes will be on one of their upcoming US tour dates, so prepare for some bootleg footage.
